Clubs do not survive without the sacrifices made by people like Frizz and Harry.
Below is a short summary of their contribution to the Bullants.
John “Frizz” Cochrane
John “Frizz” Cochrane’s contribution to the Bulleen Templestowe Cricket Club is unparalleled, spanning more than 55 years of dedicated service, leadership and loyalty. Since joining the club as a 14-year-old in 1970, Frizz has become one of the most influential figures in the club’s history, helping shape its culture, preserve its heritage and support its growth across multiple generations.
While his playing career was exceptional, featuring 228 matches, two premierships, multiple captaincies and numerous batting and bowling awards, it is his tireless work off the field that truly defines his legacy. Frizz has served in countless committee and administrative roles, including Vice President, Secretary, Junior Delegate and Club Representative, contributing thousands of volunteer hours to ensure the club’s ongoing success. His commitment to governance, player recognition and club development has been unwavering.
As Club Statistician for an extraordinary 46 consecutive seasons, Frizz has meticulously recorded and preserved the achievements of every player and team, becoming the custodian of the club’s history. His authorship of three major club history publications has ensured that the stories, achievements and spirit of the Bulleen Templestowe Cricket Club will endure for future generations.
Awarded Life Membership at just 25 years of age and later honoured through the naming of the John Cochrane Best Clubperson Award, Frizz’s devotion, loyalty and selfless service have left an enduring legacy. Few individuals have given more to the Bulleen Templestowe Cricket Club, and his extraordinary commitment continues to inspire all who follow in his footsteps.
Harry Young
Harry Young’s contribution to the Bulleen Templestowe Cricket Club stands among the most significant in the club’s history. Joining the club in 1974/75, Harry immediately established himself as an outstanding all-rounder and leader. After just one season in the First XI, he was appointed captain, a role he held for five seasons. Under his leadership, the club secured the 1976/77 First XI premiership, and he captained the side in 59 matches with an exceptional winning percentage of 64.4%.
Harry’s playing record reflects both remarkable consistency and elite performance. Across 116 First XI matches from 1974/75 to 1984/85, he scored 3,660 runs at an average of 35.88 and claimed 260 wickets at just 14.73. His achievements included four centuries, eleven five-wicket hauls, a hat-trick and two First XI premierships. His extraordinary 1980/81 season, in which he scored 610 runs at an average of 101.67, remains one of the finest batting performances in club history.
Beyond the statistics, Harry’s loyalty, commitment and professionalism helped shape the culture of the club. He was a respected role model for emerging players and set standards that influenced generations. His legacy is reflected through his selection in the Club’s Team of the Century and Greatest First XI Team of 50 Years, and through the Harry Young Most Improved Senior Player Trophy, named in recognition of his lasting impact.
Congratulations to both Frizz and Harry on this richly deserved recognition. Their dedication, leadership and service have played a significant role in shaping the Bulleen Templestowe Cricket Club, and their contributions will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
Go Bullants!
