Vale Andrew “Red” Chadwick

February 5, 2025

Dear Bullants,

It is with great sadness that on 2nd February 2005, Andrew Chadwick passed away after a battle with cancer. Andrew, or more commonly known as Red (or Red Chaddy) made his debut with the Bullants back in 1975/76, playing 7 games in the Under 14’s.

Although he missed most of the next two seasons, he returned in 1978/79 where he made his senior debut in the 4th XI. The next few seasons saw Red establish himself as a wicketkeeper/batsman and in 1981/82, he accumulated 329 runs in the 4th XI at a fine average of 65.80. Listed below are his scores in the 4th XI for that season:

ROUND OPPOSITION SCORE HOW OUT
1 St Davids Did Not Bat N/A
2 Nunawading 47 Bowled
8 Doncaster Footballers 113 Caught
9 Vermont South – 1st Innings 37 Bowled
  Vermont South – 2nd Innings 4 Caught
10 Forest Hill 83 Not Out
11 Eley Park 45 Caught
  Total Runs 329
  Average: 65.80

His batting efforts that season saw him win both the BHRDCA and Club 4th XI batting averages!

The following seasons saw Red establish himself in the 3rd XI, with an occasional cameo in the 2nd XI. In 1985/86, he took on the role of 3rd XI captain. It was a tough initiation for Red, as most of the senior players had either retired or were focussing on football. Instead, he found himself in the difficult position of motivating a squad of young players, some of whom were still playing in the Under 16’s. To his credit, the team strung together 3 wins towards the end of the season.

He captained the 3rd XI again in 1986/87; however he decided to retire at the end of the season. He was enticed back to play one game as a fill in in 1987/88 and played a further 4 games in 1990/91; before retiring permanently.

His overall stats are as follows:

Games Played: 93

Batting:

Innings Not Outs Runs Average Highest Score
87 11 1326 17.45 113

Bowling:

Balls Bowled Maidens Wickets Runs Average Best Bowling
87 7 4 160 40.00 1/2

Catches: 85 Stumpings: 6

Aside from his cricketing skills, his other attributes were a great sense of humour and an infectious laugh! His younger brother, Peter, also played many games with the club and is a life member.

For most of us, the last time we saw Red was at the club’s 50th anniversary function back in November 2019, or at his mother’s funeral a few years back.

On behalf of the club, thank you Red for your service to the mighty Bullants. In particular, the support that you gave me when our backs were against the wall during some tough cricket times in the mid 80’s. you might be gone, but you are never forgotten. Rest in peace mate.
